Black Hairy Tongue
Course Description

BHT Overview
Black Hairy Tongue (BHT) is a temporary and harmless condition where the filiform papillae on the tongue elongate, giving the appearance of a "hairy" tongue. This section introduces the condition, highlighting its causes, prevalence, and associated symptoms, which include discolouration, bad breath, and a tickling sensation.

Diagnosis and Pathology
Diagnosis of BHT is primarily clinical, based on its characteristic appearance. The condition results from hypertrophic papillae, often due to poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, or certain medications. This section covers the pathology, discussing the role of bacteria and yeast in discolouration, and emphasises distinguishing BHT from other oral conditions.

Treatment and Prevention
Effective treatment of BHT involves improving oral hygiene and addressing contributing factors. Regular tongue cleaning, quitting smoking, and reducing coffee or tea consumption are key preventive measures. In more persistent cases, medical treatments such as topical retinoids may be recommended.

Epidemiology and Education
BHT is more common in older adults, smokers, and individuals with poor oral hygiene. This section focuses on educating patients about the condition, its benign nature, and the importance of regular oral hygiene practices to prevent recurrence.

Patient Information Leaflet
A customisable leaflet for dental practices is provided, offering clear and concise information about BHT for patients. It covers the condition's causes, symptoms, treatment options, and prevention strategies, helping patients understand and manage their oral health.

Course Completion
Participants will complete a feedback survey and take a multiple-choice exam. Upon passing, they will receive a GDC-compliant CPD certificate. The course emphasises patient education and practical management strategies for Black Hairy Tongue.
